Discrimination – for Employees

Discrimination

Discrimination in the workplace can take the form of unfair treatment based on factors such as origin, gender, age, religion, disability and/or sexual identity.

Discrimination occurs when these personal characteristics mean that you have unequal opportunities, have to endure derogatory remarks or are treated unfairly.

I am treated differently from others – is that discrimination?

Not all unequal treatment constitutes discrimination. In the workplace, people are sometimes treated differently for objective reasons. Examples of objective criteria are qualifications, professional experience and/or performance. Decisions based on such criteria do not constitute discrimination.

How do I recognise discrimination?

The following signs can indicate discrimination:

  • Older and younger employees are systematically disadvantaged in training and development.
  • You are not allowed to wear religious symbols, such as a necklace with a cross, at work.
  • Employees from the LGBTQ+ community are excluded from social activities.
  • They often have to endure derogatory remarks and insulting comments due to a personal characteristic.
  • They are excluded from important projects, decisions and tasks due to personal characteristics.
What can I do if I experience discrimination?

Our recommendations for taking action if you experience a violation of personal integrity also apply to discrimination. You can find the procedure here: What can I do if I am affected by a violation of integrity?
