Threat and Violence – for Employees

Threat and violence

Whether it is verbal attacks, intimidation or even physical attacks, experiences of violence trigger feelings of powerlessness and undermine the sense of security of those affected.

Violence in the workplace must not be tolerated. If you are affected, there are ways to protect yourself and get support.

What constitutes threat or violence in the workplace?

Threat and violence can take many forms. These include verbal attacks, threats, stalking and physical violence. Repeated attempts at intimidation or the deliberate creation of an unsafe working environment can also be included.

What can I do if I become aware of any incidents?

If you observe violence in the workplace, show civil courage! Make it clear that you do not tolerate such behaviour. Support affected people by listening to them, encouraging them to report incidents and acting as a witness yourself. Together, you and others can contribute to a safe working environment.

What legal options do I have?

Various legal safeguards are in place in the event of threats and violence. Depending on the type of violence or threat, criminal charges may be filed for defamation, coercion, threats or bodily harm. In addition, there are protective mechanisms under employment law that your employer must implement.

What can I do in the event of threat or violence?

Our recommendations for action to take in the event of a violation of personal integrity also apply to threats or violence. You can find the procedure here: What can I do if I am affected by a violation of integrity?
